LGBT in the Holy City

July 30, 2015PAST EVENT

Jerusalem’s annual gay pride march takes place Thursday afternoon from 5pm and is a much more modest, low-key event than the flamboyant summer parade in Tel Aviv. Though there are many LGBT and gay rights organizations active in the capital, there  is also opposition – mostly from the religious leadership in the Holy City.

Meeting at MediaCentral, we will proceed to Tmol Shilshom, 5 Yoel Solomon Street in Nachlat Shiva where leaders of Jerusalem’s gay community will discuss with  us some of the issues and challenges they face. Following the discussion, we will join the march at Independence Park (Gan Haatzmaute).

Event will include:

  • Tom Kening,  spokesperson for The Open House, an organization which focuses on community building, services and social change for the LGBT community.

  • Daniel Younes from Havruta, the religious gay men’s organization, which provides support and guidance for those who are shunned for their sexual orientation.

  • Deputy Mayor Ofer Berkovitch, speaking about the municipality’s view of the parade, who will meet us at Independence Park.
