TODAY! Confrontation in Syria – Israel vs Iran – Strategic Analysis With Maj. Gen. (ret.) Yaakov Amidror – Monday, Jan. 21, 2019 at 1:00pm

January 22, 2019PAST EVENT

Israel’s military announced this morning that it struck Iranian targets inside Syria including weapons storage sites, a site at Damascus International Airport, an Iranian intelligence site, and an Iranian training camp. According to Russia’s control center at the air force base in Khmeimim, four Syrian soldiers were killed in those strikes. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said at least seven other people were killed in the Israeli raid, likely Iranian and pro-Iranian troops.

The Syrian surveillance center reported that the IDF attacked the Damascus International Airport and the suburbs of the capital last night: “This is the strongest and most extensive aerial attack in the region, and many missiles were able to hit the targets.”

IDF air strikes took place hours after a missile was identified by Mount Hermon. The Iron Dome successfully intercepted the missile which was launched from Syria.

“We have a permanent policy, to strike at the Iranian entrenchment in Syria and hurt whoever tries to hurt us,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier. This is the first attack the IDF has publicly declared in the era of Chief of Staff, Aviv Kochavi.

Maj. Gen. (res.) Yaakov Amidror will discuss the developments and the potential implications amid deep concern about the buildup of Iranian proxies in Syria in recent years.

Maj. Gen. (res.) Yaakov Amidror is the former National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister of Israel and the Head of the National Security Council and chief intelligence officer of the Northern Command. Today, Maj. Gen. (res.) Amidror is a researcher at the Jerusalem Institute for Strategic Studies (JISS) as well as the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA), in Washington D.C.
