International Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 20, 2015PAST EVENT
January 27- the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau – is commemorated as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, in Europe and at the UN and in many other countries.  Often, remembrance is paired with a discussion of current issues – not least, is anti-Jewish sentiment on the rise?  How do western democracies and the UN distinguish between hateful speech and violence against Jews as a people, and criticism and protest against Israel’s policies as a nation-state?

France’s PM Valls said in a speech to Parliament last week, in an indictment of the country’s tolerance of anti-Semitism: “We haven’t shown enough outrage! How can we accept that cries of ‘death to the Jews’ can be heard on the streets?”  Dieter Graumann, president of Germany’s Central Council of Jews, describes the current rising tide of anti-Semitism in Europe as “the worst times since the Nazi era”.

Journalist Ben-Dror Yemini and diplomat Gideon Behar will address the recent threats and attacks on Jewish communities and Israeli targets, and what is fueling the growing anti-semitism, in Europe and around the world.

  • Ben-Dror Yemini  is an Israeli journalist for the daily newspaper Yediot Ahronot.  His recent book “The Industry of Lies” deals with anti-Israel incitement and violence and its connection to traditional anti-Semitic Jew-hatred.

  • Ambassador Gideon Behar is a former Israeli ambassador and currently the director of the foreign ministry’s department for combating anti-Semitism.

  • A recent immigrant from France will share his personal experience of anti-semitism before immigrating to Israel.
