Gay Pride, Politics and Pinkwashing with Likud MK Amir Ohana and LGBTQ Community Activists

May 30, 2016PAST EVENT

The Tel Aviv gay pride parade this Friday is regarded as one of the most colorful and vibrant parades in one of the world’s most ‘gay friendly’ cities. The municipality expects some 180.000 people to participate including some 30,000 tourists. This year’s theme is the empowerment of women in the LGBTQ community.

The tour explored the struggle for gay rights in Israel from three different angles, the current situation of gay rights in Israel and the accusations of ‘pinkwashing’ (using an alleged progressive policy to gays to divert attention from the conflict with the Palestinians in the disputed territories).

Our three speakers discussed gay pride, politics and pinkwashing:

MK Amir Ohana, the Likud’s first openly gay lawmaker
Imri Kalmann, Chairman of the ‘Aguda’ – National LGBT Task Force
Zehorit Sorek, a lesbian orthodox mother of two and long time activist for gay rights in Israel.
